The Nintendo Entertainment System(also called NES or Nintendo) is an 8-bitvideo game console that was released byNintendo in North America during 1985, in Europe during 1986 and Australia in 1987. In most of Asia, including Japan (where it was first launched in 1983), China, Vietnam, Singapore, the Middle East and Hong Kong, it was released as the Family Computer (ファミリーコンピュータ Famirī Konpyūta^?), commonly abbreviated as Famicom (ファミコン Famikon^?) or FC for short. In South Korea, it was known as the Hyundai Comboy (현대 컴보이) and was distributed by Hynix which then was known as Hyundai Electronics. In Russia, an unlicensed clone was manufactured called Dendy (Де́нди). A clone that was popular in Eastern Europe in the 1990s was the Super Design Ending-Man BS-500 AS, also known as Terminator. Similarly, in India, clones by the names of Little Master and Wiz Kid were popular.^[6] In Poland, there was a clone produced calledPegasus, and in Argentina, there was a clone called Family Game. It was succeeded by the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

As the best-selling gaming console of its time,^[7]e[›] the NES helped revitalize the US video game industry following the video game crash of 1983,^[8] and set the standard for subsequent consoles of its generation. With the NES, Nintendo introduced a now-standard business model of licensing third-party developers, authorizing them to produce and distribute software for Nintendo's platform.^[9]

In 2009, the Nintendo Entertainment System was named the single greatest video game console in history by IGN, out of a field of 25.^[10] 2010 marked the system's 25th anniversary, which was officially celebrated by Nintendo of America's magazine Nintendo Power in issue #260 (November 2010) with a special 26-page tribute section. Other video game publications also featured articles looking back at 25 years of the NES, and its impact in the video game console market.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, known in Japan as Akumajō Dracula X: Gekka no Yasōkyoku (悪魔城ドラキュラX 月下の夜想曲^?, officially translated Devil's Castle Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight),^[1][2] is anaction-adventure game developed and published by Konami in 1997. It is the 14th installment of the Castlevania series, the first installment released for the PlayStation, and a direct sequel to Castlevania: Rondo of Blood.

Symphony of the Night was an important milestone of the Castlevania series. It steered the series away from the standard level-by-level platforming formula of older titles and introduced a new style of open-ended gameplay mixed with RPG-like elements that would be emulated by most of its successors. A similar, earlier form of this type of gameplay existed in Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. The development of these features can be attributed to Koji Igarashi, the game's writer and one of the team's newest members. Igarashi, a noted fan of 2D games,^[3] was instrumental in refining the game's control scheme. His primary motivation for the abrupt design change was seeing dozens ofCastlevania games in the "used" bargain bin in Japanese video game stores, as linearCastlevania games offered limited replay value after completion.^[4] He also established an official Castlevania canon, in an attempt to tie up several loose ends in the series' time line during Symphony of the Night. Other notable staff include character designer Ayami Kojimaand composer Michiru Yamane.
